Excerpt from a writing assignment from my creative writing class.
From the pocket of her dress, Rain pulls out pieces of bread which she holds up to the sky. Ella watches in amazement as a tiny bird lands on her palm and picks at the crumbs. Frustrated, Ella cannot read Rain’s mind or her caretaker’s. Another mystery. After much contemplation, she thinks that they might be wearing a magical ward that blocks her, but she no way of knowing if this is true. Even the mind of the servant who brings her food is blocked from her. The caretaker motions for Rain to come along that playtime is over. As Rain turns to walk away, she reaches up and pulls the ribbon free. Ella’s heart breaks as Rain disappears down the path.
